History of Hula Hoop
History of Hula Hoop or Hooping or Hoop Dance, as you like :-). Everything expresses the same thing – dancing and hooping. Although it may come as a surprise to some (as was the case in my case), Hula Hoop has a long history.
There are several major milestones in the Hula Hoop world:
- 1400 BC – Hoops appear in the form of small light reed hoops that Indians dance with to tell stories. The hoop is a circle of life for them. 2. 16th century – Part of the Christian festivities before the Lent is the dance of girls with wooden hoops.
- 1. mid 19th century – England is booming and the hoop is becoming fashionable. The children play with wooden rings and use a stick to roll them on the ground or circle them around the waist as they do today. 2. mid-19th century – British sailors, while visiting the Hawaiian Islands, notice the similarities between the hip movements of local ‘Hula’ dancers with popular physical activity at home in England. They compare the word h hula ’to ho hoop’. This is where the ula Hula hoop ’ is formed
- 1958 – A plastic hoop (Wham-O) begins in America. A year later, sales reached 100 million.
- 1960 – Circus performers include circling with several hoops in their performances.
- The art has been slowly returning to the general public since 2000
